Summer Study 2007

06 | How Do We Contend for the Gospel?

In this last class, we consider the ways that the Gospel calls for us to live a "cross-shaped" life. The Gospel is a message that kills us and brings new life. Received through faith, the Message of the Cross is the scandalous and subversive word that kills the "old person" held captive by the powers of sin. As the Message of Grace, also recieved through faith, the Gospel brings resurrection and new life so that we may serve and reign with Christ. We contend for the Gospel by the Gospel - living out the truth of the Gospel AND proclaiming the Message of Truth about Christ Jesus our Savior and King.

05 | What Steals the Power and Joy of the Gospel?

This week, we consider two "thieves" that steal the power and joy of the Gospel - idolatry (irreligion) and self-righteousness (religion). The Gospel is the means that God uses by His power to transform us according to the pattern of Christ's perfection. In order to understand this, we must see that the Gospel proclaims the complete and more than sufficient work of Christ which saves us. The true Gospel also stands opposed to the false "gospels" which seek to add or take away from the Message of Truth.

04 | What Does the Gospel Do For Us and To Us?

This week we continue our discussion from last week by considering how Jesus' death on the Cross and resurrection leads to our redemption - being set free from the power of sin and death - and our reconciliation - being at peace with God our Father, enabled to live for His glory and pleasure. We see how God worked in Christ to heal us from the 12 root problems of our fallen condition.

03 | How is the Cross Central to the Gospel?

This week we begin to explore the 12 key things that Jesus accomplished in His work on the Cross for us. On the Cross, in His "one act of righteousness," Jesus has dealt with the problem of death, unrighteousness and ungodliness that Adam unleashed in the World. In this lesson, we begin to meditate on the Cross as 1) a revelation of God in truth, 2) a blood sacrifice, 3) sustitutionary and vicarious death, and 4) the means of our redemption. We will continue this discussion next week.

02 | How Does the Gospel Reveal Our Fallen Condition?

Part of the power of the Gospel is its ability to expose our brokenness in terms of spiritual death, ungodliness and unrighteousness. In this lesson, we look at 12 root problems that we all inherited from Adam, our first father. These root problems produce all of our "surface level" sins. In order to understand Jesus' work for us, we must clearly see what has gone wrong in order to see how God working in Christ seeks to heal us and restore us.

01 | Why Recover the Gospel?

Within each generation, the Gospel of Jesus Christ - the Word of the Cross, the Message of Truth - must be re-covered, re-contextualized and re-proclaimed as God's power for salvation and spiritual transformation. We are moving into a time of crisis in the West. Strauss and Howe call this a "Fourth Turning." As we wake up to this reality and the great opportunity that we may have, it is time for faithful followers of Christ to rediscover the VISION and MISSION that Christ our King left for us and RE-Cover The Message that was "once for all" entrusted to the saints.
