Phase 2 | AWAKE |
Ephesians 5:13-16 ... all things being exposed by the light are made evident. For everything made evident is light, and for this reason it says: "Awake, O sleeper! Rise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you!" Therefore be very careful how you live not as unwise but as wise, taking advantage of every opportunity, because the days are evil. (NET)
In the first half of PHASE 2, we want to become AWAKE to the reality of the spiritual war in which we live. This War began in the past, is raging in the present, and will be concluded in the future. Understanding how this War has progressed in history so far gives us perspective and instruction on how to live in our times with vision and mission.
MTM Step 2.1 | Seeing The Spiritual War |
1 Chronicles 12:32
From Issachar there were 200 leaders and all their
relatives at their command - they understood the times and
knew what Israel should do. (NET)
Understanding the times in which we live is critical to our mission as the people of Christ. We have to be awake to the reality that each day we are living in the midst of great War. This Great War began long ago and will end in the future; in the present we are caught in the middle of a great conflict between the spiritual powers in the Heavenly Realm. In order to understand where we are now, we must understand where we have come from. In this first workbook of Phase 2, we explore human history from eternity past to the present from a "birds eye view" tracing the major developments that have produced the World in which we now live so that we might also understand our times to know what to do.
MTM Step 2.2 | Preparing for Spiritual War |
2 Peter 3:10-12
But the day of the Lord will come like a thief; when it
comes, the heavens will disappear with a horrific noise,
and the celestial bodies will melt away in a blaze, and the
earth and every deed done on it will be laid bare. 11 Since
all these things are to melt away in this manner, what sort
of people must we be, conducting our lives in holiness and
godliness, 12 while waiting for and hastening the coming of
the day of God? (NET)
It is important not only to know how the War has progressed so far, but also how it will end. Every human being chooses a side in this War; there are no neutrals. This war is not fought with physical weapons, but with the weapons of thoughts and ideas that shape the spirit and soul of every human being. God has provided our weapons for this war in the message of the Gospel. Based on what we know about the end of the War, we are encouraged to pursue the things that are pleasing to Christ and bring Him glory because we will give an account to Him. In the six lessons of this unit, we take a look to the future in order to cultivate an eternal perspective.
