The ESV Study Bible

I am often asked to recommend study bibles and in the past I have suggested either the NASB or NIV study bible as among best. Now there is another excellent resource to add to the list - The ESV Study Bible.

The ESV Study Bible was just released in October of 2008. It is the most comprehensive study bible released to date with over 20,000 notes, 50 articles, 200 charts, 200 full color maps and many excellent full color illustrations. I have been scanning the introductions to the books and looking through the helpful articles and I have to say that this is one of the best study Bibles I have ever seen.

Each book is introduced with excellent background information supplemented with charts, maps and full color illustrations. The text of each book is supported with extensive notes. I was surprised to find that the notes are will balanced. In difficult or controversial passages the different views are often articulated with strengths and weaknesses allowing the reader to work through the arguments. This is very helpful.

When you buy the ESV Study Bible you are also given access to the free ESV Study Bible site. This site is also excellent. The site contains all of the material in the Study Bible along with other “perks.” When you sign up for the site it becomes personalized for you with the ability to add your own notes and resources. The website alone is an excellent resource and gives you access to the content of the Study Bible and your personalized content in any place you have access to the internet.

There is more I could say about this bible but you probably want to check it out for yourself. You can visit the website here. The ESV Study Bible is the one that I will be recommending from now on.
